The End Of A Zone: an ode to twenty-twenty two
This season in A zone has been one of my favorites thus far. Fox is at a magical age where awareness has crept in more broadly, arming him with curiosity + speech able to ask the right questions that further excites him for all that this wild life entails. Closing weekend always falls just before my birthday. I was able to live my 34th year with two people I love, in a place that I love, doing what I love and I couldn’t really fathom it any other way.
Cold nights around a fire cooking dinner and eating smore’s
Bold and chilly mornings boiling water for a pour over
A dirty bed headed child leaping from bunk beds to the large main bed, bouncing all about
The crackling and sizzling of sausage and farm fresh eggs packed from home
Watching this growing boy chase grasshoppers down dirt paths and dried grassy hill sides as we hunt - exploring every ant colony he comes across (which is a perfect reflection into what I shall do for homeschooling next)
God has been on our side this season so far -
Three bucks harvested and one given to us by a new hunter from out of the state. Unwilling to deal with the hassle of attempting to ship meat across country, he asked my husband to create a mount of his first deer and have it sent. Grateful for Matthews guiding + direction in getting in on a good size buck + payment for the mount, he gladly gifted us the venison!
I know my husband well enough to know that he loves and values the new hunter above the others. New hunters who’s mindsets are in the right place. A place of connection and honor and perhaps self perseverance. Someone who sees this life as more than a trophy but, as a way to become more ancestral.
I am emersed in gratitude to God for all of the lessons and growth these past short months in A zone. With time spent in the blanket of peace and wholeness, your mind is able to adapt to a new clarity unable to be found in other corners of life. I can see areas I would like to clean up in my parenting - my own behaviors or rituals at home and new paths and directions I would love to forge. I am able to spend more time being thankful for all of the riches in my life.
During the winter months we will be revisiting A Zone to manage the coyote population on the lands. We’ve noticed the numbers skyrocketing over the last few seasons and left unchecked, can decimate the deer population rather quickly. Coyote is pretty disgusting to eat, but we will use the pelts to create clothing and bedding.
Zone D3-5 is now open near our home in the Nevada Sierras for Bear + Mule Deer
Lets see what experiences + knowledge God has in store for us as the rest of the year unfolds
